Southwest Honors the Memory of Educator and Civil Rights Leader Sal Castro

castro castro castro
  Sal Castro at Southwest  (3/25/10)

On Monday, April 15, Sal Castro, a historic figure in the struggle for education rights, died at the age of 79.   Sal Castro was a prominent educator and civil rights leader who spent the greater part of his life courageously fighting to improve the inequalities for Mexican-American and African-American students in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) school system.

He is best known for his role in the "walkouts" of five East Los Angeles public schools 45 years ago in March 1968. This seminal moment in the history of the Chicano Movement was made into a HBO film in 2006 entitled “WALKOUT” and the role of Castro was played by the actor Michael Peña.

On March 25, 2010, Sal Castro met with students at Los Angeles Southwest College and presented the movie in the Little Theatre.  According to Professor Cifarelli:

“Sal Castro should be remembered for more than just the walkouts. He lived as an activist for education, giving back to students and education for his whole life. When he came to Southwest, he refused payment because he valued the opportunity to motivate students over profit. He spoke to our students in a way that was so inspiring. He advised all of us to stand up for who we are and what we want--and not to accept the status quo: demand a quality education; then go out and get it! Don't tolerate anything less. Don't tolerate falling victim to a dysfunctional education system. Take things into your own hands. I will remember meeting him forever. He was so cool and down to earth that we loved having him visit us. Sal will forever be one of my heroes. He's an inspiration to all teachers and students for his dedication to student success.”

Southwest honors Sal Castro’s memory and contributions to generations of students in Los Angeles. We are proud  Mr. Castro visited our campus and shared his message of hope and the need for continued struggle for educational equity.

Reggie Jr.s’ has had a great season, winning his league undefeated, winning the CIF championship, and winning the Southern California Regional’s to make it to state.

Remarkably, this is Reggie Jr.’s first year coaching at Redondo Union High.

This is a history making event. Reggie Sr. and Reggie Jr. are the first father and son to ever win a state title in California. Reggie Sr. won the state in 1988 coaching Manual Arts High.
