Denim Day 2011 was a great success at LASC!

Denim Day is a campaign to raise awareness and educate the public about rape and sexual assault. This movement arose from the outrage following an Italian Supreme Court decision in 1998 to overturn a rape conviction because the victim wore tight jeans.

There was a good turnout for the information booth, moment of silence, and panel discussion. Also, the Spanish presentations were well received. Many staff and students wore their Denim Day shirts proudly. Over $400 was raised from the sale of shirts. Proceeds from the event will be donated to a local women’s shelter.

Thank you to the hard-working and dedicated Denim Day committee and volunteers!

Los Angeles Southwest College is a participant in the Prevention of Campus Violence programs funded by the Department of Justice. Colleges of the Los Angeles Community College District and Mount Saint Mary coordinate this program under the leadership of the research division of the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California.

The grant strives to develop programs to prevent campus relationship violence, domestic violence, date rape and stalking. Los Angeles Southwest College has established a campus response team to develop special programs and to provide assistance to victims of sexual and/or domestic violence. The Campus Response Team of Los Angeles Southwest College can provide confidential assistance.

Understanding the concept of abuse and distinguish between different types of abuse
Verbalize the motivations or explanations underlying violence against women in intimate partner relationships
Understand the relationship between abuse in intimate partner relationships and power and control
Recognize the signs and different aspects of abusive relationships (physical, emotional, sexual, financial)
Define the elements of healthy relationships
Verbalize the ways an individual, college, or community can assist victims of abusive relationships
Learn strategies of dealing with abusive relationships when personally experienced, witnessed or experienced by friends and/or family members

Sexual Assault

Learning Objectives

Understand the concepts of sexual assault, rape, and consent
Review basic realities and statistics related to sexual violence on campus
Articulate the definitions and the nature of the various forms of sexual violence acts perpetrated against women in college environments
Learn strategies of dealing with and confronting negative attitudes towards women and prevalent "myth rapes"
Understand the notions of power and control and their role in sexual violence
Be able to explain why the history of consensual relationship between the victim and perpetrator is not relevant in determining whether sexual violence has taken place
